The Nagaland Gaon Buras Federation (NGBF) has lauded DGP Nagaland Rupin Sharma for transforming jails from institution of punishment to rehabilitation and also cracking the whip on police personnel involved in substance abuse.
In a statement, NGBF president Sahlem Konyak and general secretary Shikuto Zalipu noted that Rupin Sharma’s efforts to integrate jail inmates with the society post-release and to make them productive components of the society while in the prisons, making ‘correctional institutions’ was the most noble task a good human being could have ever done.
As DG (Jail), NGBF said his mission in carrying out a program to train jail inmates in stitching and helping them to open their own production outlets after their release, transforming a convict to self-employed or self-sustaining individual and also initiating training programs for the jail staffs and preparing them to be future trainers for the inmates was noteworthy.
NGBF said he is not only a reformer but also a strict and disciplined police officer, who had cracked the whip on police personnel indulged in alcohol and substance abuse and ensuring that the unit commanders physically take stock of the arms and ammunition of their units.
Of the 43 police personnel facing action, NGBF said seven police personnel have been sacked as part of a crackdown on drug peddling and abuse by adopting a “reform or perish” approach and encouraging officers with drug or alcohol problems to come forward for treatment. Two have been demoted, one compulsorily retired, and 14 issued penalties, it said.
As reported, it said the state police have also seized drugs worth Rs. 25 crore between June and August.
“Mr. Rupin Sharma has made changes in the lives of many police personnel which deserve to be appreciated. It is indeed a matter of pride for Nagaland to have him as the head of the police department.
He has become a household talk and a reason to be hopeful and optimistic,” NGBF stated.
Further, NGBF also lauded chief minister Neiphiu Rio for always standing for the good of the state and supporting the DGP as he takes initiatives to improve the department and the state for the better.
The federation also expressed gratitude to deputy CM & minister in-charge of home, Y. Patton for his ever-willing support to the initiatives being carried out by DGP in the police department.
