KOHIMA, SEP 14 (NPN): Deteriorating condition of NH-2 alternative road at Dzüphileiyi in Phesama village under Kohima district has raised growing concerns among commuters and transporters, particularly during rainfall.
The narrow stretch becomes difficult to navigate when wet, with potholes and mud making movement hazardous. The limited width of the road also frequently leaves vehicles struggling to pass each other or getting stuck, resulting in traffic congestion and delays.
Commuters told Nagaland Post that the poor condition of the road, coupled with its narrow and uneven stretches, could lead to serious accidents if a vehicle suffers a mechanical failure while negotiating the route.
They also said the road was taking a toll on vehicles, with repeated travel over damaged sections reportedly contributing to mechanical problems. The difficult conditions have further increased travel time as vehicles are forced to proceed slowly and negotiate potholes and other damaged portions.
Another concern is the reported violation of vehicle-load restrictions imposed by the Phesama Youth Organization (PYO), which directed vehicles using the alternative road to carry only half loads. Despite the restriction, several vehicles are reportedly continuing to carry loads beyond the permitted limit. Commuters said the combination of overloaded vehicles and the already weak and narrow road infrastructure could accelerate further deterioration and pose additional risks to road users.
