The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has begun its probe into the recent bomb attack in Manipur that claimed the lives of two minor children, conducting a spot inspection at the site in Bishnupur district on Thursday.
The attack occurred in the early hours of April 7, when a suspected rocket or mortar struck the home of a BSF soldier in Tronglaobi village, killing his five-year-old son and infant daughter while critically injuring their mother. The incident has sparked widespread outrage and protests across the valley districts.
Following the tragedy, Chief Minister Y. Khemchand Singh announced that the case would be handed over to the NIA for investigation. During the spot inspection, police recovered a live shell and a launcher from the edge of the village. Preliminary examination suggested the launcher was country-made, while the shell was of military grade.
Security forces have since arrested three suspected cadres of the United Kuki National Army (UKNA) in follow-up operations in Churachandpur district. The arrests led to the recovery of arms, ammunition, and 21.10 kg of raw opium. The suspects were identified as Jampao Kuki, Sasang, and Paulallem Vaiphai. The UKNA, however, issued a statement denying involvement in the attack, asserting that it does not target civilians.
Meanwhile, protests have intensified across the valley districts, with demonstrators defying curfew orders in Imphal West, Bishnupur, Imphal East, Thoubal, and Kakching. Protesters blocked roads with burning tyres, debris, and logs, chanting slogans such as “Stop state terrorism and proxy war” and “Strongly condemn the killing of children and women.”
On Wednesday night, clashes between protesters and security forces broke out in several areas, prompting the use of tear gas and mock bombs to disperse crowds. Tensions escalated further after three people were killed when CRPF personnel opened fire on a mob attempting to storm their camp near Tronglaobi village.
Despite heavy security deployment, rallies organized by groups such as the All Manipur United Clubs Organisation (AMUCO) continued, with representatives meeting the Chief Minister to press for an end to violence and accountability for the killings.
The situation remains tense as the NIA formally begins its investigation, with public anger and grief fueling ongoing demonstrations across the state.
