A Nigerian footballer was arrested here today for tampering with his visa and staying in the country illegally. The foreign national, Edoho Gilbert, was on contract as a football player with a local club, Sunrise Athletic Club till September. Police suspected foul play when he deposited his visa upon arrival in the city on July 5 last and the former had sent it for verification to New Delhi. It was learnt that Gilbert was issued a visa on September 9, 2007, with validity up to October 6, 2007. He, however, tampered with the date and made it valid till December 5, 2008. He was produced before the chief judicial magistrate and remanded into judicial custody.
The Police are in touch with the Nigerian embassy.
