DIBRUGARH, AUG 18 (AGENCIES): Jorhat district administration has imposed a night curfew along the Assam-Nagaland border following intelligence inputs about possible extremist infiltration.
District Magistrate Jay Shivani prohibited movement of people and vehicles within a five-kilometre belt on the Assam side from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
The order cited Intelligence Branch and police inputs that extremist organisations could enter Assam through the Nagaland border and create disturbances. Reports also indicated that Ulfa-I could use border areas to transport newly recruited volunteers and conduct other activities.
The curfew was imposed under the BNSS and will remain in force until further notice.
Army and security personnel, police, magistrates, forest officials and other law-enforcement personnel on duty are exempt.
The administration said such restrictions help prevent interstate crimes and anti-national activities. Violations will attract prosecution under Section 223 of the BNS.
