National Institute of Technology (NIT), Nagaland Science Society (NSS) and Kohima Science College, Jotsoma in collaboration with the Department of Science and Technology along with Government Polytechnic Kohima observed the National Science Day on February 28.
At NIT Chumoukedima campus, to mark the day, the 7th edition of “Applying Logic and Reasoning for Igniting Science (ALRIS)” was organised based on the theme, “Empowering Indian Youth for Global Leadership in Science & Innovation for Viksit Bharat.”
Addressing the gathering, chief guest, University of South Africa, Prof. VS Vallabhapurapu discussed the importance of green technologies in ensuring a sustainable future.
Noting that technology has improved daily life, but also led to environmental harm, he stressed the need to shift to renewable energy sources like solar, wind, and hydro energy to reduce carbon emissions and waste.
Emphasising on energy efficiency and biodegradable materials to minimize environmental damage and ensure a healthy planet for future generations, he called for renewable energy, Prof. VS Vallabhapurapu suggested solar as the best option and nuclear energy as a temporary solution.
He also emphasized the need for low-power memory systems to reduce energy use in data centers, In his speech, guest of honour, IIT Patna, Prof. Manoranjan Kar, spoke on the importance of focus by questioning oneself and try to solve it, drawing example from the life of C.V. Raman, a brilliant and focused scientist, who overcame many challenges to become an icon in science.
He said Raman, from a young age, was determined to pursue scientific independence for India. Despite facing struggles, including skepticism and opposition, Raman’s unwavering focus led to his ground-breaking discovery of the “Raman Effect,” which eventually earned him the Nobel Prize.
On the occasion, tree plantation was also carried out while an exhibition on the innovations by Students of NIT was showcased at the innovation room.
A science exhibition, quiz competition, debate competition, and poster competition were organised in different categories.
Around 140 students participated in the programme from 10 schools of Dimapur and ChĂĽmoukedima.
KOHIMA: National Science Day cum Inter-Departmental Competition and Exhibition at Kohima Science College, Jotsoma was held under the theme, “Science for Smart Living: Innovations for Tomorrow”.
Delivering key note address, Er. Keyiekhru Rhutso, principal of Government Polytechnic Kohima, encouraged the youths to participate in a healthy rivalry and explore exciting innovations and creations. He also mentioned the Viksit Bharat, a vision of a developed India by 2047 with world-class infrastructure and technological advancements, nurturing a generation of innovative thinkers and problem solvers.
He challenged the students to use science to enhance their life, come up with innovations for a better world. He also emphasized on the development of the state and questioned about more innovative ideas to solve problems prevailing in the state such as traffic congestion, conditions of the road and the scarcity of water.
Following the theme of the event, students presented various innovative ideas and inventions with a total of 15 projects from 11 departments. The first position was awarded to the project, “Harnessing Biomass for Sustainable Future” which was presented by the students of department of Chemistry.
The second position was awarded to the project, “Potential of Bio-Entrepreneur through Grasshopper Farming” presented by the students of Zoology Department. The third position ended in a tie with the project, “Smart Chemistry for a Sustainable Future” by the students of Chemistry department and the project, “Traffic Remodel” by the students of Physics department.
Babu Mech, secretary of Science Club, KSCJ delivered the welcome speech in which he emphasized the power of science in understanding the world and solving problems for a better future.
A total of 6 institutions participated in this exhibition. 15 different and innovative projects were presented by 11 departments.
