NK Naga’s bollywood collaboration brings folk music to n’tl spotlight

Award-winning singer NK Naga, one of Nagaland’s most prominent musical talents and recipient of the prestigious Ustad Bismillah Khan Puraskar awarded by the Sangeet Natak Akademi under the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, has announced a major Bollywood music collaboration that will showcase Naga folk music on a mainstream Hindi platform.
The project comprises four original songs that will be released under Sunshine Music, a division of Sunshine Pictures Ltd., Mumbai, headed by noted Bollywood producer Vipul Amrutlal Shah. Known for producing films such as Aankhen, Namastey London, Singh Is Kinng, Force, Commando, and The Kerala Story series, Shah’s involvement marks a significant opportunity for Naga music to reach a wider national audience.
The music project is being directed and released under the supervision of Suresh Thomas, Founder and CEO of Crescendo Music Label. A veteran of the Indian music industry, Thomas is credited with discovering and promoting several prominent artists, including Baba Sehgal, Mika Singh, Lucky Ali, Mohit Chauhan, Sukhbir and Anaida.
As part of the collaboration, NK Naga will perform two tracks for Sunshine Music—one solo number and one duet with a leading female playback singer. The remaining two songs will feature female vocalists and are being developed under his creative guidance.
The project blends traditional Naga folk music with contemporary Hindi compositions, incorporating indigenous rhythms, melodies and cultural influences into a modern musical framework. The initiative aims to introduce the rich musical heritage of Nagaland to audiences across India through mainstream cinema and music platforms.
Over the years, NK Naga has represented Nagaland at various national and international events, earning recognition for his efforts to preserve and promote the state’s cultural identity through music. His career has often been viewed as a testament to how artists from the Northeast can successfully bridge regional traditions with national audiences while maintaining authenticity.
Industry observers have described the collaboration as a landmark initiative and potentially one of the first mainstream Bollywood folk-fusion projects to place Naga folk music at its core. The project is expected to enhance the visibility of Nagaland’s musical traditions while creating new opportunities for artists from the region.
The recordings have been completed, and the songs are scheduled for release later this year. The collaboration is being widely regarded as a significant cultural milestone that could strengthen Nagaland’s presence in India’s mainstream entertainment industry and open new avenues for creative talent from the state.
