NLA Committee onpetition holds first sitting

Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) Committee on Petition for 2025-26 session held its first sitting at the C. Chongshen Committee Room of the Assembly Secretariat on May 19. The meeting was chaired by Benei M. Lamthiu, MLA.
According to DIPR report, the Committee was formed on March 8, 2025, under Rule 233 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the NLA. It consists of chairman Benei M. Lamthiu and members Tongpang Ozukum, Dr. Kekhrielhoulie Yhome, Namri Nchang, A. Pongshi Phom, B. Bangtick Phom, and C. Manpon Konyak.
During the meeting, Benei M. Lamthiu outlined the role of the Committee, explaining that its main function is to review petitions referred to it. If a petition follows the required rules, the Committee may authorize its circulation. If not, the Speaker has the power to decide whether it should be circulated.
The Committee examines complaints in petitions, gathers evidence, and presents reports to the House with recommendations to resolve the issues or prevent similar cases in the future.
Petitions must be signed, dated, and countersigned by a member of the NLA. They should be written in English or Nagamese and addressed to the Secretary of the Assembly Secretariat. Anonymous petitions or copies of letters sent to officials without a specific request for grievance redressal will not be considered. Instead, they will be filed in the Committee Branch.
The Committee invites individuals, associations, and institutions to submit petitions regarding public grievances following these guidelines.
