Nagaland Legislative Assembly Speaker Sharingain Longkumer, Lions Club of Kohima and Kohima Press Club (KPC) have expressed profound grief at the demise of A.S. Arthur, former secretary of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly, who passed away on May 2 at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, New Delhi at the age of 99.
In his condolence message, the Speaker noted that late Arthur served the Assembly from 1974 to 1984 with exemplary dedication, integrity and professionalism. He said Arthur’s stewardship greatly contributed to strengthening the institutional framework and enhancing the dignity of the House. Longkumer described him as a distinguished administrator and guiding presence whose contributions would be gratefully remembered.
Lions Club of Kohima recalled that Arthur was the Charter president of the Club in 1979–80 and again served as president in 1980–81. It stated that he laid the foundation for Lionism in Kohima and dedicated himself wholeheartedly to humanitarian service. The Club described him as a visionary leader whose commitment enabled the organisation to continue its activities over the years. According to Lions Club of Kohima, late Arthur had also served as Special Secretary in the Nagaland Legislative Assembly before joining politics in Manipur, where he was elected MLA from Ukhrul in 1984 and later served as Minister for Forest & Environment and General Administration in 1994.
Extending condolences, Lions Club president Lion Oken Jeet Sandham prayed for strength and comfort to the bereaved family.
KPC also mourned his demise, noting that Arthur was the father of its member Yirmiyan Arthur Yhome. In a message, president Vishü Rita Krocha and general secretary Seyiekietuo Keretsu described him as a respected senior political figure from Manipur whose legacy would continue to inspire. They extended deepest sympathies to the bereaved family and prayed for peace and comfort during this time of grief.
