Nagaland Law Students’ Federation (NLSF) conducted its second phase of clean and fair election campaign at Mokokchung district from May 25-28 with the objective to reach out to the rural people and sensitize them the provisions laid down for election under the constitution of India.
A press note by NLSF president Imliben Lemtur and gen. secretary Medochutuo Kiewhuo stated that the Federation strongly laid emphasis on the mal-practices during the election that deteriorate Naga society, like villagers going for a consensus candidate, capturing of polling booth, taking bribe from the candidate, proxy voting, setting up of camps at different locations, use of alcohol during election etc which were contrary to the provisions laid down by the constitution.
Federation apprised that the Nagas were privileged to have special provisions under Section 371(A) of the Indian Constitution, however due to misinterpretation of the provision it led to erosion of one’s identity and integrity. Federation also encouraged the villagers by giving relevant sections of law that needed to be known and practiced by all the law abiding citizens.
During interaction with the villagers the members apprised them of outside interference during election which left them with no option but to surrender to such evil practices.
Federation also appealed to all not to indulge in violating the law as it hampered the future of the Naga society. It asked them to pledge not to let other people decide their future but exercise their franchise by electing people friendly legislatures.
