NLSF organizes legal awareness programme

Keeping in mind the need to sensitize people pertaining to legal provisions under the Indian constitution, an interactive programme on legal awareness was organized by Nagaland Law Students’ Federation (NLSF) at Hotel Saramati, Thursday.
The programme was mainly on the role Law students can play in bringing around change in various quarters, where the public could be made aware of their legal rights and also the practical ways, to pursue information gathered through RTI applications.
The resource persons ACAUT (RTI Cell) convenor Dr. khekugha Muru, NVCO president and ACAUT (Legal Cell) convenor Kezhokhoto Savi deliberated on burning topics  including impact of RTI in Nagaland, Human Rights, Lok Ayukta, consumer rights, disabilities and Swachh Bharat.
In his speech, Dr. Muru said ACAUT would pursue the case of BDO backdoor appointment case till a logical conclusion was attained so that no such cases of corruption resurfaces in the future.
He challenged the gathered law students to each take up various lapsing issues in the state which could guarantee the betterment of the Naga society.
Kezhokhoto in his speech said the impacts, plus points and weaknesses of the RTI Act in Nagaland was being compiled and that the same report would be brought out during the 10th anniversary of RTI on 2016.
He called on the Law students not to compromise on consumer rights but work collectively towards a future where corruption would find no place.
During the interactive session, one of the Law students gave a speech on rights of differently abled people and the problems they face in Nagaland, in regard to various benefits allocated by the central government for their well being.
Another student spoke on the human rights according to UN’s resolution and the need set up a State Human Rights Commission, to check on the violation of human rights in the state, which included keeping domestic helpers below the age of 14, excesses committed by armed personnel under the AFSPA and also various political groups.
Khriesi, a visually impaired student of Kohima Law College gave a brief account of her experiences as a differently abled person and her zeal to work for the people like herself.
Earlier the programme was hosted by NLSF general secretary Khemvu Mekru while keynote address was delivered by NLSF president Lanusowa.
