NNC (PB) condoles Carter’s demise

Naga National Council (Parent Body) has mourned the demise of former president of the United States of America, Jimmy Carter, who advocated for a political settlement of the Indo-Naga problem.

In a condolence note, NNC (PB) general secretary, V.Nagi said late Carter worked for peaceful settlements for political conflicts, highlighted human rights violations and climate change issues, and, in particular, advocated for a political settlement of the Indo-Naga problem.

He was the world leader, who showed real concern for the political plight of the Naga people and the internal conflict of the National Workers since 1980s, Nagi said.

Nagi recollected the Atlanta Meet in 1997, convened by North American Baptist Fellowship to try to achieve unity between the four Naga National Political Groups by inviting church leaders and the Naga Hoho for consultation and conflict resolutions.

“It was Carter’s Center that expressed a genuine concern for the unity of the Nagas and political settlement with the Government of India”, Nagi said and noted that the meeting will always shine in the annals of the political history of the Naga people.

Carter also showed his unfailing concern and support throughout and Nagi said when they first met at Chiang Mai, Thailand meeting in 2008, Carter even wrote a personal letter to the delegates expressing his profound wish for Naga reconciliation and political settlement with the Government of India.

Therefore, Nagi said Naga people in particular have lost a noble and great leader who stood for Naga reconciliation and a political settlement with the Government of India.
