NNPSGSEF Chumou backs OPS restoration

Dimapur

Nagaland National Pension System Government Service Employees Forum (NNPSGSEF), Chumoukedima Unit, has pledged full support to the ongoing movement to scrap the National Pension System (NPS) and restore the Old Pension Scheme (OPS) in Nagaland. The pledge was taken during a sensitization programme held at the Deputy Commissioner’s Conference Hall, Chumoukedima, on August 12.
The programme was chaired by Chumtila Sangtam, general secretary of the Unit, and began with a presidential address by Kekhrielenuo Pienyii, unit president, who urged government employees to remain informed and united in safeguarding their future. In the first technical session, Adabe Namgi, finance secretary, NNPSGSEF Central Team, delivered an in-depth presentation on the NPS. This was followed by a comprehensive deliberation by Avizo Nienu, president of the Central Team, who outlined the structures and implications of NPS, Unified Pension System (UPS), and OPS.
Key concerns raised included the market-linked nature of NPS, which offers no guaranteed monthly pension and exposes employees to financial insecurity. UPS was presented as a hybrid model still under policy discussion, while OPS was highlighted as a time-tested, non-contributory scheme that guarantees 50% of last drawn basic pay plus DA, fully indexed to inflation and protected against market risks.
In his address, Nienu emphasized that OPS ensures lifelong financial dignity and stability, unlike NPS which transfers risk onto employees. He stated that while UPS offers a middle path, it cannot match the reliability of OPS.
Sherhinlo Keppen, information secretary of the Unit, called on all employees to stand united and spread awareness to strengthen the movement.
The programme concluded with closing remarks and the distribution of the Forum Charter and undertaking, symbolizing collective commitment to pension justice.
