The government on Wednesday assured that there is no shortage of petrol, diesel or LPG in the country and urged citizens not to believe rumours or resort to panic buying.
At a media briefing, Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Sujata Sharma, said all refineries are operating at high capacity with adequate crude inventories, while sufficient stocks of petrol and diesel are being maintained and retail outlets are functioning normally nationwide.
She said panic buying in some areas, triggered by social media rumours, had led to unusual crowding at petrol pumps despite adequate availability. Oil terminals and outlets, she added, have sufficient stocks.
On LPG, the government said supply continues to be affected due to disruption in the Strait of Hormuz, though no dry-outs have been reported and deliveries are continuing. Additional allocations have been made, with commercial supply increased in phases. To ease pressure, the government is accelerating the shift to piped natural gas, while states have been directed to curb hoarding, with over 2,700 raids conducted so far.
