Noklak artisans meet President; showcase North Eastern crafts

DIMAPUR: A team of artisans from Noklak district, led by Woven Threads, a design label engaged in artisanal textile design and manufacturing in collaboration with local communities, along with artisans from across the Northeast, had the honour of meeting the President of India, Droupadi Murmu.
During the visit, the artisans shared their stories and experiences of working on the prestigious “At Home” Reception held on January 26, 2026. The initiative was undertaken under the aegis of Rashtrapati Bhavan with technical support from the National Institute of Design.
The project showcased crafts from all eight Northeastern states, conceptualised and executed through collaborative efforts of designers, entrepreneurs, artisans and weavers. It highlighted indigenous knowledge systems, traditional craftsmanship and contemporary creative practices unique to the region. Artisans played a significant role in crafting invitation kits and representing the rich artistic and cultural heritage of the Northeast.
A notable milestone was the participation of an 80 member artisan delegation, the majority of whom were women from remote areas. For many, the visit to the national capital and Rashtrapati Bhavan marked their first journey outside their home states, making the experience deeply emotional and historic.
As part of the Presidential gift from Nagaland, Team Woven Threads x Noklak presented handcrafted home textiles made with “Ehlon niu fibres” (stinging nettle and orange wild rhea fibres), comprising three pillow covers from their newest collection. The collection was supported under “The Canvas Home Small Grants” initiative of Handmade To Market, formerly Aid to Artisans.
Key institutions associated with the initiative included Rashtrapati Bhavan, Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region, NEHHDC, National Institute of Design, and the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade. Prominent leaders connected with the initiative were Piyush Goyal, Jitin Prasada, Jyotiraditya Scindia and Sukanta Majumdar.
