Nagaland Press Association (NPA) has strongly condemned attack carried out by miscreants, at the residence of the editor of The Shillong Times, Patricia Mukhim in Shillong on April 17 evening.
In a condemnation note, NPA said that the sole intention of the attackers were to create fear in the minds of those serving the Fourth Estate.
NPA viewed that such attack on journalists in the country was an attempt to silence the voice of those, who speak for the truth, espousing the cause of democracy and a free society that believes in peace and dialogue. “Attacks on journalists are also a reflection of growing intolerance in the country”, NPA added.
The association said Mukhim was not only an editor of a newspaper published out of Meghalaya, but a senior journalist who had been actively engaged on issues of national importance.
NPA said such attack was an outright disrespect for the democratic values of peace and dialogue that the Fourth Estate represents, whether in Meghalaya, Delhi or Nagaland.
Further, the press body hoped that the newly elected government under the leadership of chief minister Conrad Sangma would try to get to the bottom and bring the culprits to book.
