NPCC holds candlelight march;flays Electoral Roll revision in Bihar

DIMAPUR, AUG 14 (NPN)

In solidarity with the nationwide protest led by the Indian National Congress, the Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC), along with its subordinate units, organised a Candlelight March on Thursday at Congress Bhavan, Kohima, and across all District Congress Committee (DCC) offices in the State.
The demonstration was held to express strong opposition to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls currently being undertaken in Bihar under the directive of the Election Commission of India. In a statement, NPCC communications department expressed concern over the timing, intent, and transparency of the SIR, particularly as the country approaches key electoral processes.
It alleged that the arbitrary and selective nature of the exercise undermines the democratic principles of free, fair, and inclusive elections, which are fundamental to the Constitution.
NPCC further claimed that the SIR in Bihar was politically motivated, aimed at manipulating and distorting voter lists to disenfranchise legitimate voters while favouring vested interests. It warned that such actions set a dangerous precedent and risk compromising the credibility of the Election Commission and the integrity of the electoral process.
Calling for immediate intervention, NPCC urged the Election Commission of India to halt the SIR in Bihar and ensure that no such exercise is carried out without broad-based consultation, adequate safeguards, and strict adherence to the model code of conduct and constitutional norms.
The Congress Party further said it would continue to defend the rights of every eligible voter and resist any attempt to subvert democracy through coercive or authoritarian means.
