Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) said it would continue to demand ballot paper system wherein VVPAT printout would be used as ballot paper, thus reducing costs as control unit would no longer be needed.
Addressing the State level workshop to discuss and plan execution of the ‘Udaipur Nav Sankalp Declaration’ with office-bearers, members, frontals and cells at Congress Bhavan, Kohima, NPCC president K Therie said the party would take up the issue with Election Commission of India (ECI) after its reply to a representation filed by a group of NGOs.
Drawing attention of party workers to the issue of nearly 19 lakh missing EVMs, he attributed Congress’ losses to EVM manipulation. He said BJP with barely 35% of votes was able to rule the country because other political parties were unable to put up a united alternative.
He mentioned that the basis for Congress’ fight was “Justice for all’, claiming that Congress being the party that drafted the Constitution of India, understood its application, while other parties, including regional parties, had to resort to a reactionary stance as they did not have this originality. He said this stance had led to destruction of centuries of harmony and emergence of religious intolerance in the country.
Alleging that BJP did not have any notable economists or political strategists to frame the future of the nation, Therie termed this as a deficiency and a reason for their indulging in communal and religious politics to remain in power while the nation continued to regress economically and socially.
He further claimed that Congress was the only party that practised true inner democracy where all were allowed to speak, adding that this was evident at the recent Udaipur Chintan Shivir where political workers were heard throughout. He further called on party workers to come forward with suggestions and opinions to take the party forward.
Speaking on future programmes of Congress, the NPCC president urged Mahila Congress workers to give suggestions on implementing 33% reservation in urban local bodies. He also urged the youth not to lose heart, stressing that with the right government policies and their efficient implementation, there would be no shortage of opportunities for the youth for which, he claimed the Congress had a clear vision.
Speaking on the occasion, All Indian Congress Committee (AICC) secretary in-charge of Nagaland Ranajit Mukherjee exhorted the delegates to reconnect with and take Congress’ programmes, policies, ideology and principles to the grassroots.
Urging the participants to be vigilant against destructive and divisive communal forces, he claimed that Congress was the only party that could unite the nation and provide a harmonious environment. He further called for humility to accept the present circumstances and the courage to take the challenges facing the party head on.
The workshop was chaired by NPCC general secretary Capt GK Zhimomi, while welcome and introductory speech on the implementation of the Udaipur Nav Sankalp Declaration was delivered by NPCC working president and NPCC Implementation Committee ‘Chintan Shivir Udaipur’ (Nav Sankalp Declaration) convener Khriedi Theunuo.
In the afternoon session, frontal chiefs and cell chairmen delivered presentations to the House, which was followed by discussions on various issues. Vote of thanks was proposed by NPCC general secretary Shaboh Konyak.
