NPF appeals EC to re-consider date of counting for by-poll

Naga People’s Front (NPF) has appealed to the Election Commission of India (ECI) to re-consider the date of counting (December 3, 2023) for the up-coming state assembly elections in five states including the bye-election to the 43 Tapi assembly constituency in Nagaland as the day falls on Sunday.

In a letter to secretary ECI Sanjeev Kumar Prasad, the NPF secretary general, Achumbemo Kikon, MLA, stated that Nagaland is a Christian-dominated State where 90% of its citizens were Christians. NPF reminded that Sunday is observed as a very solemn Day of Worship for the entire Christians, adding that Nagaland was no exception. NPF has, therefore, appealed to the ECI to re-consider the date of counting.

It may be mentioned that Mizoram’s ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) and the main opposition Congress on Monday opposed the date of counting for votes in the Assembly polls being fixed for December 3 as the day (Sunday) is a prayer day for Christians. Both the Congress and the MNF separately wrote letters to Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar to change the counting date.
