NPF flays assaults on locals by non-Nagas

DIMAPUR, SEP 9 (NPN)

Naga People’s Front has expressed deep concern over the “disturbing rise” in incidents of physical assault, harassment and intimidation of local Nagas by non-Nagas within the state.
NPF press bureau said such acts were not only condemnable but also posed a serious threat to peaceful coexistence and harmony. It pointed out that Nagaland has always been known for its hospitality and respect towards diverse communities who had made the state their place of livelihood.
However, the party said the recent pattern of “unprovoked assaults”—whether in marketplaces, public spaces or residential areas—had created fear and resentment among Nagas. It maintained that these developments could not be brushed aside as isolated incidents since they undermined trust and mutual respect in society.
It therefore urged law enforcement agencies to deal firmly with such cases to deliver justice and restore public confidence. It also called upon district administrations and traditional institutions to remain vigilant against such behaviour.
Further, the party appealed to both local and non-local residents to uphold mutual respect and peace. It reiterated that while Nagas welcomed everyone to live and work peacefully in their land, intimidation or physical assault of locals would not be tolerated and must be met with the full force of law.
NPF reaffirmed its commitment to safeguard the dignity and rights of the Naga people while working for peaceful coexistence with all communities.

WSYF expels assault accused
Taking serious note of the September 7 incident at Ghoshito village, Niuland district, wherein a local resident was allegedly assaulted by non-locals identified as Bijay Das (son of Judhisthir Das) and his family members from Hojai, Assam, Western Sümi Youth Front (WSYF) has expelled Das and his family from all Sümi-inhabited areas of the Western region.
In a press release, WSYF vice president Mughaka Chophy and general secretary Botoho Achumi “strictly ordered” the accused and his family to vacate the region on or before September 13 and to compensate the victim’s medical expenses and damages within the stipulated period.
The youth body warned that failure to comply with the directive would “absolve WSYF of any responsibility for any untoward consequences that may follow.” It also cautioned that any individual, group or organisation providing shelter or protection to the expelled family would be deemed complicit and face stern action from WSYF.
Meanwhile, WSYF directed all village authorities under the Western region to remain vigilant and ensure that the expelled family did not seek refuge within their jurisdiction.
