NPF Kohima flays butchers

Alleging continuous exploitation and harassment of Kohima denizens by some dishonest traders, especially the butchers, who use dishonest practices like tempering of scales; denial of customers right to choose; insertion of rejected/stale meat without customer’s knowledge etc, Nagaland People Front (NPF) 9th Kohima Town A/C has expressed pain over the practice stating such act amounts to holding the society to ransom and portrays a ‘very ugly and repulsive’ image of Kohima to any observer.
Adding that, price of meat in Kohima, have been hiked by leaps and bounds over the years and public expectations of quality meat and correct weight have always been rudely denied.
James Liezietsu president and Hukato, assistant general secretary, NPF 9 A/C in a release urged the department of weight and measures to conduct frequent checking and ensure usage of standard weights and measures, and usage of real stones as substitution for a varied range of weighing stones.
Also pointing out that the evolution of the then Kohima Town Committee (KTC) into Kohima Municipal Council (KMC) had been welcomed with great zest by the people hoping to bring about much advancement in varied aspects of civic life by being responsive to the needs and problems of its denizens, the NPF party urged the committee to continue checking such menace ‘more vigorously’.
Stating that the tenure of present KMC is nearing its end, effectiveness and actions of every councilor is being re-evaluated to rectify the mistakes and chart the future course; the party hope the committee perform better by adopting measures and act decisively.
In eradicating the social menace the party also suggested easy accessible complaint booths, immediate attention to complaints received, proper action, setting up of electronic weights in some busy markets, etc, as some positive steps towards the goal.
