Naga People’s Front (NPF) and the National People’s Women Front (NPWF) have jointly condemned the arrest of two Catholic nuns and three tribal women in Chhattisgarh over alleged charges of human trafficking and religious conversion.
In separate press releases, both organisations expressed deep concern over what they described as a misuse of legal provisions and communal bias targeting minority communities. NPF stated that the arrests, reportedly initiated by a fringe group without credible evidence, raise serious questions about the harassment of individuals engaged in humanitarian service. It also highlighted the long-standing contributions of Christian missionaries, especially among tribal communities, rooted in compassion and social upliftment.
NPF called on the Chhattisgarh government to conduct a fair, impartial and time-bound investigation. It demanded the release of those arrested if charges proved baseless and sought action against individuals responsible for lodging false complaints. The party reaffirmed its commitment to secularism and justice, urging protection of constitutional rights for all citizens.
Echoing the concern, NPWF president Aneii Khaming described the arrest and imprisonment of Sister Preethi Mary and Sister Vandana Francis as a grave violation of human rights. She stated the incident wounded the conscience of a society that values dignity and religious freedom. NPWF expressed solidarity with the Sisters, their families and the wider Church community, and demanded an impartial probe with immediate release and restoration of honour.
Emphasising the importance of unity and tolerance, NPWF vowed to continue standing against injustice towards women, minorities and the innocent.
