In significant show of unity, leaders of prominent Naga Political Groups (NPGs), cutting across organisational lines, have come together and jointly appealed to NSCN groups operating in Eastern Nagaland (Yung Aung and Angmai factions) to desist from fratricidal violence and work towards unity, reconciliation and collective responsibility.
In a joint appeal signed by N. Kitovi Zhimomi, convenor, Working Committee/NNPGs; Rev. Puni Mao, member, collective leadership (MCL), NSCN (I-M); Kraibo Chawang, MCL, NSCN (I-M); ‘col.’ (Retd) Isak Sumi, working convenor WC/NNPGs; Alezo Venuh, co-convenor WC/NNPGs; and P. Tikhak Naga, working convenor WC/NNPGs– the leaders said the Nagas, having fully experienced the futility of violence, must sincerely and soulfully strive to amend the dark chapter of fratricidal bloodshed that has contaminated the sacred Naga national struggle. They stated that the greatest challenge confronting the Nagas today is not only external forces but also the deep internal chasm.
Warning that continued infighting would imperil Naga history, culture and identity, the signatories said it must be acknowledged and denounced that attempts to assert supremacy over one another among the Nagas have proved too costly in terms of blood, lives and resources, and warned that the same cycle would continue unless humility and prudence prevailed. They reminded that no fruits shall be harvested if the present trend of infighting among the Nagas continued, and urged all to rise above narcissism and instead inculcate empathy.
They said that the ongoing armed clashes between NSCN groups in Eastern Nagaland only revive a sad and unfortunate chapter of the Naga national struggle.
The signatories emphasized that forgiveness and acceptance among Nagas was the only way forward to assert and assure just place for Nagas among the community of nations to avoid self-destruction.
They added that regardless of the size or strength of their opponents, salvation lay solely in their ability to see, hear and work together.
They said that despite differing opinions, agreeing to strive in one voice as “the Naga,” irrespective of challenges, was the only path to redemption.
The NPG leaders said that Nagas should not be defined by politics but by blood, emphasising that Nagas are one and must determine their destiny through shared blood ties.
They therefore made an earnest appeal to NSCN (Yung Aung) and NSCN (Angmai) to desist from further fratricidal actions and to reflect on the need for Naganess as a whole.
