National People’s Party (NPP), Nagaland State, observed the 10th death anniversary of its founder and former Lok Sabha Speaker, late Purno Agitok Sangma, on March 4 at the State NPP Headquarters, Bank Colony, Dimapur.
Remembered as one of the tallest leaders from the North East and a visionary tribal statesman, Sangma’s legacy was recalled as continuing to inspire generations across the nation.
Delivering a tribute, NPP Nagaland vice president and chief spokesperson K. James Vizo highlighted Sangma’s remarkable journey from humble beginnings in West Garo Hills, Meghalaya, to serving as chief minister, union minister, and Speaker of the Lok Sabha (1996–1998). He noted that Sangma upheld parliamentary democracy with neutrality and dignity during a politically turbulent period, ensuring fairness to both ruling and opposition benches and elevating the stature of the Speaker’s office.
Vizo further said the founding of NPP in 2013 reflected Sangma’s vision of a party rooted in regional pride yet national in outlook. Referring to recent developments, he acknowledged the departure of two councillors due to political compulsion but stressed that the party’s strength lies in its ideology, disciplined cadre and grassroots workers. He urged members to remain united, organized and committed to transparency and service.
In his message, NPP Nagaland state president Nyamnyei Konyak MLA described Sangma as a guiding force for the North East, exemplifying integrity, courage and commitment to democracy. He urged party workers to draw inspiration from Sangma’s humility, strengthen the party through unity and discipline, and honour his legacy by serving the people selflessly.
Meanwhile, two delegates from NPP Nagaland—vice president and chief spokesperson K. James Vizo and state executive member Kikokul John Kulnu—will represent the state unit at the one-day Capacity Building Training Programme (CBT) scheduled for March 7 at the NPP National Headquarters, Shillong.
The programme was chaired by NPP Nagaland vice president Rosy Yanthan, invocation by secretary Khehoshe Sema, and concluded with a mass prayer.
