NPP seeks urgent action to tackle influx of immigrants

DIMAPUR, JUL 26 (NPN)

Expressing serious concern over the reported influx of immigrants into Nagaland following eviction drives in Assam, the National People’s Party (NPP) Nagaland unit has called for urgent and coordinated intervention from the state government on a war footing to prevent any demographic and security crisis.
In a representation submitted to the state home minister, NPP warned that the current situation, if left unchecked, posed a grave threat to the state’s security, demographic balance, and cultural identity.
The party pointed out that porous and vulnerable entry points along the Assam-Nagaland border, unregulated movement of migrant labourers into towns and border districts, inadequate surveillance mechanisms at critical entry points were contributing to the rising risk of illegal settlements.
In this regard, NPP proposed a series of measures including the deployment of dedicated border patrol units with round-the-clock surveillance, installation of CCTV cameras and checkpoints, and joint coordination with Assam Police and Central to monitor cross-border movement.
It also sought biometric registration and verification of all migrant workers entering Nagaland, stricter enforcement of work permits, and periodic inspection drives to detect illegal settlers in urban and rural areas.
Calling for stronger grassroots involvement, NPP urged the government to mobilise village councils, colony authorities, and local vigilance committees to monitor and report any suspicious movement.
Further, it recommended the formation of a Special Task Force under the Home department to coordinate anti-infiltration efforts, digitisation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) system for better tracking, and imposition of strict penalties on individuals or groups found employing or harbouring illegal immigrants.
On the technological front, the party called for deployment of drones and real-time border monitoring tools, and creation of a state-level migrant database to track and verify entry of migrants.
The NPP urged the government to convene an emergency review meeting with enforcement agencies and border district officials, intensify verification drives at all entry points, and coordinate with neighbouring states and central agencies to prevent any influx from Assam.
Reaffirming its commitment to cooperate with the state authorities, NPP said it was ready to extend all assistance to implement these measures.
