National People’s Party (NPP) Nagaland state unit has suggested the state government to introduce a summer festival as a complementary event to the annual Hornbill Festival in order to promote year-round tourism.
NPP unit through its media & IPR cell acknowledged that Hornbill Festival has established Nagaland as a vibrant cultural hub and a premier tourist destination. However, it said tourism activity in the State remained largely seasonal. “This not only limits economic opportunities to a short period in the year but also results in neglect of roads and infrastructure until the next tourist season,” NPP state unit said.
The party expressed the view that the proposed summer festival would ensure promotion of tourism throughout the year, creating a more balanced inflow of visitors and encouraging continuous maintenance of roads and infrastructure.
In the North East, NPP unit said the yearly inflow of domestic and international tourists was growing steadily, with States like Sikkim, Meghalaya, and Assam witnessing significant tourism-driven income even during the summer months. It maintained that introducing a summer festival in Nagaland would attract more visitors boosting the State’s economy and creating greater self-employment opportunities for youth. The party also suggested themes and activities such as eco-tourism (trekking, fishing, and bird-watching); organic food and indigenous cuisine fairs;
monsoon music concerts and youth talent showcases; traditional games and inter-tribal sports competitions; faith-based prayer and healing sessions (revival meetings, counseling, and sharing of testimonies) and spiritual festivals/workshops (inter-church gospel concerts, indigenous-style worship programs, and youth gatherings to strengthen unity, peace, and Christian values.)
Therefore, the party has appealed to the state government to consider its proposal with utmost priority “for the larger interest of the people and for the continued promotion of Nagaland as a global tourism hotspot rooted in its Christian ethos.”
