The National President of the National People’s Party (NPP) and Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Conrad K. Sangma, today campaigned for party candidate I. Abenjang for the by-election to the 28-Koridang Assembly Constituency in Nagaland, scheduled to be held on April 9.
Senior NPP leaders, including vice president Vevoyi Wideo and general secretary (political) Mmhonlumo Kikon, along with other party functionaries, were present during the meeting.
Describing the visit as historic, Sangma combined political outreach with a deep respect for local history by paying tribute to the legendary Naga nationalist, Imkongmeren Ao.
Addressing the gathering, Sangma emphasized the importance of youth empowerment in the Northeast. He stated that the region, being one of the youngest in the country, holds immense potential. He stressed the collective responsibility of political leaders, society, and religious institutions to create meaningful platforms to channel the energy of the youth. He added that “our youth is our strength”
“The sole purpose of the NPP is to bring the people of the Northeast together. In the coming days, we envision a region that stands united and works collectively for the greater interest of its people,” he said.
Expressing confidence in the party’s candidate, Sangma said that I. Abenjang is prepared to serve the people of the constituency with dedication if given the opportunity. He also conveyed his prayers and best wishes for the candidate’s success in the election.
Speaking to the media, Sangma reiterated the party’s commitment to maintaining its independent identity. “The NPP has always upheld its independent identity. We are not here just for politics; we aim to build the party, the region, and the community on a foundation of positivity,” he said.
He further highlighted that the party’s mission goes beyond electoral competition and focuses on a constructive, inclusive vision for the Northeast.
On the issue of security laws, Sangma reiterated the party’s stand against the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA). “The NPP is not in favour of AFSPA. There are several other laws available to maintain security, and therefore, it should be repealed,” he stated.
The campaign meeting at the Longkhum Community Hall reflected strong coordination between traditional Naga institutions and the NPP’s regional vision for development, highlighting a collaborative approach toward progress and unity in the Northeast.
Short speeches were delivered by Temsu Jamir, an elder from Khensa village and NPP candidate I. Abenjang were also delivered at the programme.
