Naga Scholars’ Association (NSA) held an interaction with Nagaland governor, P.B. Acharya at Nagaland House, RK Puram, New Delhi on June 1, wherein Acharya impressed upon the Naga scholars on several issues concerning Naga society.
A press release from NSA president, Dr. Zuchamo Yanthan and general secretary, Dr. Lungthuiyang Raimei stated that, Acharya touched on basic issues such as, under-development, unemployment, poor education system and disunity among the Nagas.
While appreciating the insights of the governor, the NSA drew the attention of governor to shed light on crucial issues that was confronting Naga society across borders. NSA posed three issues as the inordinate delay of Indo-Naga political negotiation and the stalemate of the negotiation wherein the government of India has a crucial share of responsibility; the issue of militarization in Naga areas in India and Indo-Myanmar borders vis-à-vis human rights violations; the issue of the controversial bill -The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, that has attracted much protests from different sections of the society including the Northeast; and the prevailing corruption in Nagaland including backdoor appointment systems in teachers’ recruitment.
Expressing his views on the various issues and on the stalemate of the Indo-Naga political negotiation, Acharya opined that the matter should be left to the negotiators. He felt that scholars and other civil society groups should be pro-active to address the issue of corrupt system in the state. He, however, did not give out his views on the issues of militarization, AFSPA and human rights violations in the Naga areas.
