Nagaland State Biodiversity Board (NSBB) celebrates ‘International Day for Biological Diversity’

Nagaland State Biodiversity Board (NSBB) in collaboration with Razeba Sudents’ Union (RSU) organised “International Day for Biological Diversity”, under the theme “From Agreement to Action: Build Back Biodiversity” and in conjunction with Mission LiFE at Pame Tsüdu, Public Amphitheater Zhavame village, Phek on May 22.
A press release by CCF & member secretary, State Biodiversity Board, Supongnukshi, informed that working plan officer, forest department, Velatso Demo, was special guest, who shared about the impact of loss of biodiversity, loss of top soil, destruction of forest and wildlife.
He stressed on the importance of soil and that the loss of top soil will have negative effect on crop production. He also shared about the importance of trees in sequestering carbon and how burning of woods and forest fires contributed to global warming.
He further urged the community to sustainably use their natural resources and ensure that the resources were passed on to the future generations.
NSBB consultant, while delivering the keynote address, stressed on the theme, which was drawn from the adoption of Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and where India is leading a global mass movement “Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment)”which is envisioned as the India-led global mass movement that will prompt individual and collective action to protect the environment. He also highlighted about the National Biodiversity Act, 2002 and emphasized on the roles, the Biodiversity Management Committee play in managing and conserving their bio resources.
Earlier, the programme was chaired by Ngapunyi Albert Krocha, welcome address by VDB secretary Zhavame, Tho-o Shupao, Mochilü Lea greeted the gathering on behalf of Razeba Public Organisation (RPO) and vote of thanks by RSU president, Paosu Shupao.
Other highlights of the programme included, folk song by Zhavame Folk Group, competition such as story narration on best conservation practices amongst 4 villages, painting & essay writing competition amongst students and open photography contests were organized as part of the celebration.
The gathering also pronounced a strong pledge to protect the environment and to follow environment friendly habits and carried out plantation drive in the village area by the participants.
The participants included Razeba Public Organisation, village councils, women organisation, youths, students’ union of Zhavame, Zelome, Tsupfume villagea and Razeba (Ad hoc) Town.
