NSDMA activates emergency response across Nagaland

DIMAPUR, JUL 19 (NPN): In view of the incessant rainfall that has triggered landslides, flash floods and severe waterlogging across Nagaland, the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) has directed all District Disaster Management Authorities (DDMAs) to remain on high alert and activate their respective district emergency operations centres.
In an urgent order issued by secretary Sentiwapang Aier, NSDMA directed all DDMAs to prioritise the safety of citizens by evacuating residents from severely waterlogged, low-lying and landslide-prone areas, including unstable embankments and riverbanks.
The authority also asked district administrations to assess the availability of essential commodities, including food, fuel and medicines, and ensure adequate stocks during the emergency. It further directed that communication systems remain functional and rapid communication be established wherever required.
The order instructed DDMAs to mobilise coordinated response teams and keep them on standby, deploy earth-moving machinery such as JCBs and excavators to clear landslides and blocked roads, and coordinate with the Power department to shut down electricity supply in submerged areas to prevent electrocution and restore power once floodwaters recede.
NSDMA also directed district authorities to issue advisories on alternate routes, discourage non-essential travel on vulnerable roads, advise the public to stay away from swollen streams, overflowing drains and riverbanks, and refrain from spreading unverified information on social media to prevent panic.
The authority said the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) could be contacted during emergencies through the toll-free number 1070, 112 (ERSS), or 0370-2270129/30 (SEOC Help Desk).
