Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA), Home department, observed the International Day of Disaster Risk Reduction on October 13 at Capital Convention Centre, Kohima, in collaboration with Faith Based Organizations (FBOs).
Delivering the keynote address, additional secretary NSDMA, Sentiyanger Aier, highlighted the significance of the day, instituted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1989 to promote global awareness on disaster risk reduction. He emphasized the influential role of FBOs in Naga society and their potential to contribute not only in response and recovery but also in preparedness and mitigation efforts.
Aier stated that the workshop aimed to explore the role of FBOs in building resilience and strengthening disaster response mechanisms.
The occasion also witnessed the launch of NSDMA’s official weather monitoring portal—nsdmaweather.com—developed under the Nagaland Centre for Disaster Management and Atmospheric Research (NaCDAR). The portal serves as a centralized hub for real-time weather updates, early warning alerts, and climate analytics, supporting informed decision-making across sectors including agriculture, urban planning, and infrastructure.
Integrating data from automatic weather stations, satellite imagery, and GIS-based systems, the portal is part of NSDMA’s broader vision to enhance early warning systems and build a climate-resilient Nagaland.
Joint CEO NSDMA, Dr. Johnny Ruangmei, presented on Corporate Alliance Resilient Nagaland (CARE), followed by a roundtable discussion on “Building network & collaboration between FBOs and Govt. organizations,” moderated by Temsuwangshi Jamir, Asst. Manager (R&P), NSDMA.
Other highlights included a speech by Kepozo Peter Kapuh on the role of faith leaders in climate resilience, a basic first aid talk by Kholie Dolf (IRCSN), vote of thanks by Er. Keneizhatuo Kuotsu, and closing remarks by L. Jonjibemo Odyuo, Asst. Manager (RR&M), NSDMA. The programme was chaired by Keren Rose, Asst. Manager, NSDMA.
