DIMAPUR, AUG 3 (NPN): Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) on Monday said restoration of critical road links across Mokokchung district was being carried out on a priority basis following widespread damage caused by continuous monsoon rains since July 19.
In a press release, NSDMA said it was closely monitoring restoration work being undertaken by the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Mokokchung, and PWD (R&B), Mangkolemba division, to restore connectivity, facilitate relief operations and ensure the movement of essential commodities.
Persistent rainfall triggered landslides, land subsidence, flash floods and extensive infrastructure damage, disrupting road connectivity in several parts of the district. Heavy machinery, including excavators and JCBs, has been deployed for debris clearance, slope stabilisation and emergency restoration.
According to NSDMA, key routes such as the Japukong Range Road, Longtho-Japu-Mangkolemba Road and Milak Bridge-Khar-Mongchen-Mangkolemba Road have already been reopened for light motor vehicles, improving access to affected areas.
However, restoration continues on several critical stretches. The road and bridge to Salulemang village, washed away on July 19, are expected to be restored within a week, subject to favourable weather.
The 6.2-km road linking Aosenden and Aosungkum villages remains affected by landslides, with restoration underway following inspections by DDMA officials. Assessments have also been completed in Anaki C, where roads, agricultural land and plantations suffered extensive damage, and restoration is being coordinated with the concerned departments.
Work is also in progress on NH-702 at Merangkong, the Wameken village road and Unger Road, all key lifeline routes affected by landslides.
Among the worst-hit is the Jangpetkong Range Road, where around 43 km remains blocked by multiple landslides. Restoration is progressing on the 31–32 km stretch near Warumong, with vehicular movement expected to resume within three to four days if weather permits. The road is the only link to Warumong, Yimjenkimong and Molungkimong villages.
NSDMA said it was coordinating with the district administration, DDMA, PWD (R&B) and other departments to expedite restoration, prioritising roads serving remote villages and emergency services. It also advised the public to avoid unnecessary travel through landslide-prone areas during heavy rainfall and follow official advisories.
