NSF lauds state govt’s enumeration exercise

DIMAPUR, OCT 13 (NPN)

The Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) has lauded the state government for undertaking the ongoing enumeration exercise, describing it as a farsighted initiative to safeguard the political, economic and social fabric of Nagaland from the challenges of unchecked migration and illegal influx.
In a statement , NSF president Mteisuding and general secretary Kenilo Kent, said the exercise was a protective mechanism aimed at preserving the rights, privileges and future of the state’s genuine inhabitants.
It clarified that the process was not directed against any particular community, but intended to prevent misuse of state resources and opportunities by those without legitimate claims.
Expressing concern over four tribes’ refusal to participate, NSF urged all communities to view the exercise as a necessary measure for clarity, fairness and administrative integrity rather than as a divisive act.
The federation explained that the enumeration seeks to identify individuals and families who have historically settled in Nagaland before December 1, 1963, along with their direct descendants, to ensure rightful access to entitlements and protections.
Highlighting the rising instances of illegal entry and infiltration from neighboring regions, NSF warned that non-Nagas have reportedly obtained official documents and even availed benefits reserved for bona fide inhabitants. It, therefore, called on the government to tighten enforcement of the Inner Line Regulation (ILR), strengthen border vigilance, and adopt stricter measures to curb illegal influx.
Reaffirming its commitment to defend the rights and heritage of the Naga people while maintaining harmony with other long-settled communities, the NSF said it would not compromise on its founding principles or allow political opportunism to undermine its vision for a secure and self-determined Naga society.
The federation also appealed for collective cooperation from the government, civil society and all stakeholders to ensure the successful completion of the enumeration drive.
The NSF also took sstrong exception to what it termed as attempts by “certain political elements” to mislead the public and discredit its Inner Line Regulation Commission (ILRC). The remark was seen as a response to the Rising People’s Party (RPP), which had referred to the ILRC as a “mere committee.”
In a statement, the NSF clarified that the ILRC was constituted by its highest decision-making body, the Federal Assembly, and carries the collective mandate of all its federating units. To question the credibility of the commission, it said, was equivalent to undermining the unified voice of Naga students and youth who stand for the protection of their people’s rights.
The federation stated that the ILRC was formed after decades of experience to address persistent failures in enforcing the Inner Line Regulation and to combat the growing threat of illegal migration.
Urging restraint, the NSF appealed to individuals and organizations to avoid irresponsible statements that could divide the Naga people when unity is crucial.
