DIMAPUR, OCT 7 (NPN): Naga Students’ Organization (NSO) and Naga Traditional Literature and Cultural Committee (NTLCC) have opposed the formation of new Naga factions in Eastern Naga homeland and called for an agreed mechanism for voluntary public contributions instead of direct or coercive collection of taxes.
In a press release, NSO president and NTLCC chairman said the resolution was adopted at a public gathering held on September 13, 2026 at the Naga Cultural Hall in Lahe, attended by representatives and members of NSO, tribal hohos and NTLCC. The meeting was convened to discuss difficulties faced by the public over multiple taxation demands, extortion and approaches by different Naga factions.
The participants reaffirmed the position stated by NSO and people of Eastern Naga land in a joint statement on June 13, 2023, opposing the partition or formation of new factions in Eastern Nagaland (Myanmar).
The meeting said they did not recognise or encourage proliferation of new factions formed before the present generation and maintained that their political position remained committed to established Naga authorities and organisations that predated the present generation. They also took note of a September 10 declaration by National Socialist Council of Nagaland-People’s Republic of Nagaland (NSCN-PRN), signed by Joseph Naga, stating that the organisation had been formed in Myanmar.
The gathering said they had no established information regarding the organisation’s movement or activities in Myanmar and that its presence and activities were unknown to them. They therefore affirmed not to recognise or encourage further formation of new Naga factions in Myanmar, particularly in Eastern Naga Land. On taxation, the participants said Naga national movement had historically depended on voluntary public support and that the principle should continue to guide the relationship between the people and Naga national movement.
The participants said households, shops and markets were being burdened when different groups independently approached them for taxes or contributions. They resolved that no faction or organisation should independently approach homes, shops, markets or individuals to impose taxes or demand contributions.
Instead, the gathering called for voluntary contributions to be made through an agreed channel, with a designated committee or authorised mechanism responsible for collecting and forwarding the contributions to appropriate authorities.
They called upon Naga organisations and factions to respect the decision of people, refrain from direct or coercive collection of taxes or contributions and cooperate with a proper system of voluntary contributions through an agreed channel. It also urged different Naga groups to unite under one umbrella, stating that declaration was intended to reduce burden on public while preserving voluntary support for Naga national cause.
