Nagaland State Social Welfare Board (NSSWB) and State Resource Centre for Women (SRCW), along with the rest of the country celebrated the ‘National Girl Child Day’ on January 22, with the theme, “Educate: Towards a safer society for our girls”.
As part of the BetiBachao, BetiPadhao initiatives, the program was held for the school dropout girls who were undergoing vocational training under the Nagaland State Social Welfare Board training program at the Entrepreneur Development & Integrated Training Institute (EDITI), Kohima.
Chairperson of NSSWB, Bano Vinito spoke on the theme and encouraged the girls to fight for their right and not to be scared or to fall easily for someone. She said in order to fight for life, one needed to be empowered, and education needed for empowerment.
Therefore, she encouraged the girls to be more passionate about attending open school.
Special session on sexual abuse was organised for the girls by the SRCW to create awareness on the inequalities faced by the girl child in the society and how they could equip themselves and even protect their friends when such situations arise.
The session started with “Changes in Me” and “Handling Emotional Changes” by PSK-SRCW, Vekhwusalü Dawhuo, where she emphasised on the various emotional changes girls go through and how to handle themselves with these changes.
Session on “Gender Sensitisation- Gender vs Sex & Breaking Myths” was conducted by PSK-SRCW, Ajabu Tungoe. Child Sexual Abuse & Safety Measures was shared by SRCW, Gracy Ayee. SRCW, R. Juliana Medom, emphasised on Assertive Communication & Conflict Resolution and taught them how to say “No” to abuse and communicate feelings of discomfort. Prizes were distributed to the various groups for their participation in the session and various group activities.
