Nagaland State Women Commission (NSWC) has submitted a 12-point recommendation to the state chief minister and the chief secretary. The observations and the findings of the recommendation were gathered from the seminars conducted in all eleven districts by the NSWC under the theme “Towards a New Horizon”.
The recommendation signed by NSWC chairperson Sano Vamuzo and members Abeni TCK and Ellen Konyak, mainly dwelt on women and their health.
Pointing out that most women in rural areas were yet to realize the importance of health, the commission in the recommendation demanded the Health & Family Welfare department to immediately initiate rural medical and health camps for rural women.
NSWC also observed that many doctors posted in the interior districts do not stay in their place of postings, thereby neglecting their duties. The recommendation said the Department should to look into these and also to ensure presence of women health workers in all the villages. NSWC also demanded for proper allocation and representation of women in the VDBs.
The Commission observed that more than 80% of the VDBs in the State were not allocating the 25% women reservation, besides the women VDB members were also not allowed proper participation in the VDBs meetings.
On capacity building for women entrepreneurs and women farmers, the Commission observed that in many districts, agriculture & allied sectors had not put in much effort for women farmers and suggested proper coordination among the agri and allied sectors.
Stating that empowerment of women cannot be achieved without gender equity, the Commission said one of the foremost tasks of the government was to spread gender sensitization through seminar/ training and school curriculum.
On relief and rehabilitations for destitute and conflict women victims, the Commission recommended drawing out relief and rehabilitation programmes to assist destitute and conflict victims who were mostly women.
Women police bn
Chief minister Neiphiu Rio has reportedly assured the Nagaland State Women Commission (NSWC) that the State government would raise a police battalion exclusively for women in the state. This was revealed by NSWC chairperson Sano Vamuzo and member Abeni TCK during an interaction with mediapersons at NSWC office chamber Wednesday.
According to the duo, Rio said there were even plans to send Naga women police officers to the United Nations Peace Keeping Force. In its recommendation, NSWC had demanded setting up of women cell in all districts, recruitment of women police as made mandatory by the Home Ministry and ten percent of the strength of State Police force to be filled up by women.
At present it has been ascertained that women in Nagaland Police force comprised barely two percent of the total strength.
The commission also recommended separate cells for women inmates in the district jails and observed most of the district jails had no provisions fur separate women cells.
NSWC further said the chief minister had informed them that the thirty three percent reservation for women in all municipal and town councils would be implemented, starting with Mokokchung Town Council.
