The Nagaland Tribes Council (NTC) has reminded the Prime Minister of India of his 2015 commitment made at the Hornbill Festival to resolve the Naga political issue within 18 months.
In a joint statement, NTC President C. Pankathung Lotha and C. Onen Walling emphasized that two landmark agreements-the Framework Agreement (2015) and the Agreed Position (2017)-were signed with the major Naga political groups.
According to official records, talks were expected to conclude by October 31, 2019. Following this, the Prime Minister declared during his 2019 visit to Saudi Arabia that the longest insurgency in Northeast India had been solved—a statement widely acclaimed globally.
However, the NTC highlighted that despite these declarations, the implementation of the solution has been indefinitely delayed.
It has now been over ten years since the two agreements were signed, and the prolonged ceasefire period of twenty-eight years has unfortunately led to the emergence of numerous Naga political factions.
The NTC criticized both the State and Central Governments for their failure to protect citizens from the divisive actions of what was described as “at least 28 anti-Naga groups”, resulting in widespread lawlessness characterized by multiple taxation, extortion, intimidation, and kidnappings. The NTC described the ongoing situation in the state as a “free for all,” worsening the lives of the Naga people.
Consequently, the NTC has urged the Prime Minister to implement the agreed-upon solution without any further delay.
The signatories stressed that it was the Central Government’s responsibility to ensure justice, restore peace, and pave the way for all-around development so that the Naga public can return to normal lives.
In the light of the above, NTC requested the prime minister’s immediate attention and “call for the swift execution of the signed agreements.”
