NTTU plea to govt on check gates

Reeling under numerous taxes imposed on timber traders by various organizations and government departments, the Nagaland Timber Traders’ Union (NTTU) has resolved to pressurize the State government to put up only one gate or a maximum of two gates -Police and Forest department -in every district for levying tax from timber traders.
A joint meeting of NTTU office bearers and representatives of district timbers traders associations held here at Tourist Lodge on Friday also urged the State government to let timber traders avail the "working scheme" for benefit of timber traders.
Besides fixing uniform rates for "fanta" and round logs, the meeting also decided that the buyers should pay unloading charge of timber from their end.
Further, the house decided that only local timber traders should be permitted to do timber or logging business.
Meanwhile, taking exception to reports of illegal business on the sly done by some unscrupulous timber traders, NTTU warned that the union would take strong action against any timber trader found concealing illegal goods along with timber.
The union also resolved to confiscate the timbers of those traders transporting "stolen timbers."
Earlier, NTTU president Kevise Angami in his welcome address stressed on the need for timbers traders of all districts to maintain a united front so as to fight for the rights of timber traders and the meeting concluded with NTTU general secretary Alem Pongener reading out the resolutions of the meeting.
The programme was chaired by NTTU vice president Husca Zhimomi.
