DIMAPUR: Farmers’ Cell, School of Agricultural Sciences, Nagaland University, Medziphema Campus, conducted an On Farm Demonstration of Rabi Crops and Farmers Scientist Interaction on September 17 at Sirhi Angami village, Medziphema block, under Chümoukedima district.
Organised at the onset of the Rabi season, when farmers were preparing their fields for sowing, the programme aimed to help farmers adopt scientific practices at different stages of cultivation for better crop establishment, productivity and returns.
During the technical session, Dr. Kavi Sumi, Scientist, AICRP on Kharif Pulses, demonstrated seed bio priming and seed treatment using Trichoderma, explaining its role in managing seed and soil borne diseases. Dr. Sabbithi Pavan, Assistant Professor and Farmers’ Cell Member, conducted a session on beneficial insects, introducing farmers to natural enemies of crop pests through photographs and videos.
Dr. Ashwini Ananda, Scientist, AICRP on Vegetable Crops, highlighted the importance of vegetables for household nutrition and livelihood, referring to ICMR dietary guidelines. He encouraged farmers to establish kitchen gardens and explore vegetable cultivation as an income generating activity. A practical demonstration on nursery bed preparation and scientific seed sowing was also conducted.
The programme, attended by 30 farmers, received positive response. Farmers raised queries on pest and disease management, which were addressed by the scientists. Participants expressed satisfaction, noting it was the first on farm demonstration of its kind in their village.
The programme was chaired by Dr. Sentimenla Jamir, Assistant Professor and Farmers’ Cell Member, who also delivered the welcome address, while Dr. Mary N. Odyuo, Associate Professor and Farmers’ Cell in charge, outlined the purpose of the visit.
