NU research unlocks health potential of tea blossoms

NEW DELHI, OCT 13 (PTI)

Research led by Nagaland University has revealed that tea blossoms are packed with potent bioactive compounds, positioning them as a natural source for health supplements, officials said. The findings have been published in the peer-reviewed Food Research Journal.
“Rich in antioxidants and essential amino acids, tea blossoms show great promise for stress relief, cognitive enhancement, and the prevention of chronic diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular issues,” said Tanmoy Karak, Professor at Nagaland University’s Department of Soil Science.
While tea leaves dominate global research and consumption, blossoms, often discarded as agricultural byproducts, remain largely overlooked. According to Sagarika Das, a researcher at Dibrugarh University, this is the first systematic study in Assam—one of the world’s largest tea-producing regions—analysing the biochemical richness of tea blossoms from seven premium cultivars.
“Nutraceutical companies could use tea blossom extracts to create energy boosters, relaxation aids, and skin-health products. Beyond consumer health, this research offers economic opportunities for smallholder tea farmers through blossom collection and processing,” Das said. She added that utilising blossoms reduces agricultural waste, supports the circular bioeconomy, and advances environmental sustainability.
The study involved contributions from the University of California, ICAR-Indian Agricultural Statistics Research Institute, Nagaland University’s Departments of Horticulture and Soil and Water Conservation, and Dibrugarh University’s Department of Chemistry.
“This groundbreaking research highlights the potential of regional innovation to effect global change,” said Jagadish K Patnaik, Vice Chancellor, Nagaland University. He noted that findings could “revolutionise” dietary supplements and natural remedies, while fostering rural entrepreneurship and sustainable agricultural practices.
Karak emphasised the versatility of tea blossoms, which can be used in herbal teas, infused oils, dietary supplements, and wellness formulations. “With further clinical validation, tea blossoms could play a crucial role in promoting overall wellness,” he said.
