Naga United Village Council (NUVC) Tuesday condemned what it described as “the alarming and unacceptable act” of intimidation and violence perpetrated by around seven armed cadres allegedly belonging to NSCN/GPRN (Khango), who “forcefully” entered the residence of a bona fide resident at Lane 16, Naga United Village, Chümoukedima on September 7 around 1 p.m.
In a press release, NUVC said the brazen display of weapons, verbal threats and coercion created fear and insecurity among the public, posing a grave danger to peace and stability. Terming the incident a gross violation of the Ceasefire Ground Rules (CFGRs) and an assault on the dignity and safety of innocent civilians, NUVC appealed to law enforcement authorities to take immediate action to ensure those responsible were brought to justice.
It also urged the concerned group to respect the sanctity of civilian lives and adhere strictly to CFGRs. NUVC called upon all like-minded organisations and citizens to collectively denounce “such barbaric acts”, while affirming solidarity with the victim’s family.
DAYO: Dimapur Ao Youth Organisation (DAYO) also strongly condemned the incident, alleging that “armed miscreants” harassed, intimidated and robbed a mother of two in the absence of her husband.
DAYO, through its media cell, said such behaviour was a direct threat to the social fabric of Naga society and an attack on the dignity, freedom and safety of women. It stated that harassment and intimidation amounted to violation of human rights and should be denounced by all.
The organisation also drew attention to the rise in cases of intimidation and harassment by “extortionists claiming to belong to factions and brandishing firearms in public and private residences.” It further pointed out that vandalising CCTV and taking away DVR amounted to destruction of evidence.
DAYO questioned why CFGRs were not being strictly implemented and why loopholes remained unaddressed. Expressing solidarity with the victim’s family, it urged law enforcing agencies to take strict action against those responsible.
