DIMAPUR: As part of its two week-long celebration of World Consumer Rights Day, the Nagaland Voluntary Consumers’ Organisation (NVCO)stressed on the importance of the Food Safety and Standard Act 2006 based on the Consumers’ Right to Safety.
In a press release, Press and Media Cell of NVCO stated that the Act aims to consolidate the laws relating to food and to establish the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). It stated that under Section 63 of FSSA 2006, if any person or food business operator running a business without license was punishable with imprisonment for a term which may be extended to six months and also with a fine which may be extended to Rs. 5 lakh.
Meanwhile, NVCO president Kezhokhoto Savi has appealed the consumers/citizens to remain alert and check the date of manufactured/packing and expiry date before buying any food items.
It also informed the consumers to contact State Consumer Helpline with Toll Free No. 1800 – 345 – 3701 and 1800-345-3701 for any grievances during the office hour.
