In response to possible misinterpretations of its earlier statement in the media, the Naga Women Hoho Dimapur (NWHD) has issued a formal clarification regarding its stance on the sale of Naga traditional attire and ornaments. In a press release issued by NWHD president Y. Imlinungla and information secretary Lesenli clarified that it does not oppose local women or entrepreneurs engaged in selling traditional Naga attire for their livelihood, whether through market stalls or private shops. The organization emphasized that its concern lies in ensuring such sales are conducted in a manner that respects the originality, authenticity and cultural value of traditional garments and ornaments. Reaffirming its support for women’s entrepreneurship, NWHD stated that it strongly encouraged women to pursue ventures in traditional attire and textile crafts, provided these are undertaken through appropriate channels that honor and uphold cultural values.
However, NWHD reiterated its firm position against the unauthorized sale, display or distribution of traditional attire, ornaments or designs belonging to any tribe by non-Naga individuals or traders. Such activities, it stated, must have prior permission from the competent authority. “Our traditional attire carries deep meanings and cultural significance passed down from our forefathers,” NWHD noted, adding that inappropriate or uninformed sales risk misrepresentation and cultural distortion.
