
Sanitation workers of Officers’ Hill Colony, winner of cleanest colony in Kohima was felicitated by Officers’ Hill Colony Council (OHCC) at the pre-Christmas celebration-cum-celebration of winner of the cleanest colony at 2K Hotel, Officers’ Hill Colony, Kohima on December 18.
A press release from OHCC stated that, chairman of OHCC, Khrielakuo Sekhose said celebration was doubled because the colony bagged the first position out of nineteen wards in the 9th annual inter-ward cleanliness competition under Kohima Municipality for 2019.
Acknowledging the efforts of the sanitation committee, rag-pickers, sweepers, drivers and labourers, the chairman said they were the unsung heroes of the Officers’ Hill Colony.
OHC being home to many important official residences and a total of fifty-one garbage collection points, OHCC chairman encouraged the sanitation workers to keep up the good work despite the difficulties they faced.
Drawing inspiration from this achievement, the chairman also resolved to carry out cleanliness-drive every fourth Saturday of the month in 2020 in the streams and drainages within the colony jurisdiction, with special attention given to plastic waste, he informed.
In giving an overview of the role of sanitation committee and sanitation workers in OHC, treasurer, sanitation committee, Keneivotso said that while the collection of sanitation fees amounted to fifty-thousand monthly, the expenditure incurred even from fuelling of garbage trucks alone came around thirty-thousand every month.
He also added that the maintenance of the vehicle and salary of the sanitation workers also had to be accounted and exceeds the revenue.
Also addressing the gathering, president of Officers’ Hill Women Unit, Shilongmongla credited the sanitation workers for not only ensuring a cleaner environment but also bringing accolades to the colony. Each of the sanitation workers was awarded Rs. 2000 each during the occasion.
