After expiry of the deadline served to vice chancellor, Nagaland University (NU), to resolve the various problems in NU, the Post Graduate Students Union, Nagaland University Campus Kohima ((PGSUK), staged a five-hour sit in dharna Thursday afternoon outside NU office on Thursday.
PGSU said the dharna was staged in protest after vice chancellor Prof. K Kannan left his office Thursday around 3.20 p.m, ten minutes before the PGSUK ultimatum was to expire. More than 200 student volunteers turned up for the dharna.
It may be recalled the PGSUK in a memorandum submitted to the vice chancellor Wednesday afternoon, gave a 24-hour deadline to the vice chancellor to resolve the problems dogging the university, failing which the students warned that they would take up their own course of action.
Among others, the memorandum demanded immediate revocation of suspension orders served to two senior teachers of the university and the vice chancellor’s intervention in the ongoing pen down strike of Nagaland University Non- Teaching Staff Association (NUNTSA). PGSUK informed that the union might intensify their agitation.
In another development, a joint consultative meeting of NSF, NUTA, ANCSU and NUNTSA held here Thursday, resolved to organize a peaceful procession and call on the State Governor, the Chief Rector of Nagaland University, on September 1 and submit a memorandum. The procession will start from NU office and conclude at Raj Bhavan, Kohima.
CEC, NUTA, in a press release said the meeting deliberated on the failure of the university authority to fulfill NUNTSA’ s demands and the revocation of suspension orders against two NUTA leaders.
Meanwhile, CEC NUTA officials denied that they had stopped members to attend the Academic Council meeting on Wednesday at VC’s office. NUTA said the allegation leveled by NU official was “totally baseless.”
NSF seeks Governor’s intervention
Kohima, AUG 28 (NPN): Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) has appealed to the State Governor to immediately fulfill the demand of Nagaland University Non Teaching Staff Association (NUNTSA) as well as revoke the suspension orders served by the vice chancellor to two senior teachers of the university. NSF president Imchatoba Imchen and general secretary Hetoi Chishi in a memorandum to Governor K Sankaranarayanan also urged the latter to intervene and expedite the fact finding committee report from the MHRD, in all sincerity and earnestness.
Drawing the attention of the Governor to the ongoing crisis in the University, the federation said the impasse “is the perpetuation and the resultant outcome of the wrong and mismanagement of the University system which is being in operation, under classified hands, for the last fourteen years or so.”
