On farm demonstration held at Pughoboto

DIMAPUR: Farmers’ Cell, in collaboration with All India Coordinated Research Projects (AICRPs), School of Agricultural Sciences (SAS), Nagaland University, Medziphema Campus, conducted an “On Farm Demonstration and Farmers Scientist Interaction Programme” at the Model Demonstration Farm, Pughoboto sub division, on October 2.
The programme was part of a collaborative initiative undertaken by the Sub Divisional Planning and Development Board (SDPDB), Pughoboto, in partnership with SAS, Nagaland University. It was attended by 40 farmers from Pughoboto and Mishilimi, along with village leaders from Mishilimi, Lazami, Natsumi and Pughoboto, providing a platform for field based learning and discussion.
Addressing the gathering, SDO (Civil) Pughoboto, Yithachu Thur, encouraged farmers to utilise the technical knowledge and practical experience shared by experts. He also highlighted the development of the Model Demonstration Farm through the initiative of SDPDB in collaboration with SAS.
Dr. Mary N. Odyuo, Associate Professor and Farmers’ Cell In charge, introduced the team of experts and urged farmers to view agriculture as a field combining science, art and business. She emphasised the importance of continually updating knowledge and adopting scientific practices suited to local conditions.
Dr. Virosanuo Solo, Scientist, AICRP Linseed, introduced linseed cultivation and shared results of successful Front Line Demonstrations across Niuland and Longleng districts as well as at SAS farm. Dr. Pezangulie Chakruno, Scientist, AICRP Soybean, discussed soybean production and crop management practices, sharing information on improved varieties and ongoing research involving evaluation of over 400 soybean germplasm lines at SAS. Farmers were also introduced to opportunities for value added products such as soy milk, tofu, soy chunks and soy powder.
Dr. Rokozeno, Scientist, AICRP Kharif Pulses, presented results of research trials conducted in Zunheboto and Niuland districts. He explained the importance of pulses in improving soil fertility and their nutritional value as a protein source. Dr. Debika Nongmaithem, Assistant Professor, Department of Agronomy, discussed sesame cultivation and conducted a practical demonstration on seed treatment using biofertilizer. Dr. Ashwini Ananda, Scientist, AICRP Vegetable Science, highlighted the importance of vegetables in the human diet and their potential for improving household livelihoods.
Dr. Sabbithi Pavan, Assistant Professor, Department of Entomology, spoke on Integrated Pest Management (IPM), stressing timely identification of beneficial and harmful insects, and the use of disease resistant, location specific seed varieties for healthy crop growth.
During the field demonstration, experts examined standing crops and discussed visible pest, disease and nutrient symptoms. Farmers were guided on distinguishing nutrient deficiencies from pest and disease damage.
A key feature of the programme was the emphasis on method and result demonstrations, enabling farmers to directly observe agricultural practices in the field and relate technical information to their own farming conditions.
