Mount Tiyi College Wokha, hosted a one-day National seminar on NEP 2020 (National Education Policy 2020) titled “Transforming India.” Organized by the research committee and IQAC, the seminar was held on November 24.
Dr. Karen L. Donoghue, an assistant professor at NEHU, as the key-note speaker in the first session highlighted Meghalaya’s journey in embracing the NEP, acknowledging both its advantages and disadvantages.
Dr. Donoghue traced the evolution of education policies, noting that NEP 2020 is the third initiative by the government, following those in 1968 and 1986. The policy aims at holistic education, emphasizing not only academic excellence but also the overall development of students, including vocational skills and communication training.
Dr. Donoghue emphasized structural changes at both school and higher education levels and stressed the importance of multilingualism. Teacher and faculty training programs were also highlighted. Challenges faced by NEP include changing societal mindsets and adapting to the content-intensive nature of the policy.
Dr. Rosanna Kikon, addressing the valedictory session, commended NEP 2020 for its focus on skill development courses to tackle unemployment. She underscored the positive impact of incorporating multiple languages in education and expressed optimism about NEP 2020 opening gateways for students through various development courses.
The welcome address was delivered by Principal Mount Tiyi College, Dr. Bweyhunle Khing. Seminar reporting was presented by Asst. Prof. Khrunuto Kezo, with vote of thanks by Convenor, Organizing Committee Dr. Azhanuo Peki.
The seminar aimed to provide insights into NEP 2020, emphasizing its goal to secure inclusive quality education in the Indian system by 2035.
The policy envisions transforming the education system into a global powerhouse of knowledge. Discussions touched on the challenges faced and the necessity of adapting to the changing educational landscape, with an emphasis on technology as an extension rather than a replacement of teaching and learning methodologies.
