In a tragic incident, a 34-year-old man drowned at the Doyang Dam viewpoint side on July 20, while on a picnic with friends.
According to Sanis Police Station Officer-in-Charge, Suthungo, the deceased identified as Anyak Phom, from Yongphang village under Longleng district, was serving as a driver at the office of the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Wokha. The incident occurred between 11:50 a.m. and 12:00 noon, based on accounts from eyewitnesses.
Anyak had accompanied six friends from Wokha to Doyang. While freshening up near the riverside, the group spotted a boat tied to the bank. Anyak joined two of his friends who had untied the boat and climbed aboard.
The boat, reportedly in a dilapidated condition, capsized shortly after they boarded, throwing all three into the water.
While the other two managed to swim back to the shore, which was only 15-20 feet away, Anyak, who could not swim, tragically drowned.
The police, led by OC Suthungo, reached the site around 1 p.m., by which time the body had already been recovered by his friends with the help of local fishermen.
Despite attempts to revive him through CPR, Anyak was declared dead at the scene.
Following completion of legal formalities, the body was handed over to the Eastern Nagaland People’s Organisation (ENPO) members in Wokha.
The deceased’s family in Longleng has been informed, and the body will be taken there once his parents arrive in Wokha.
