A 41-year-old shopkeeper sustained injuries after being hit by a bullet allegedly fired accidentally by Army personnel in Bishnupur district on Thursday afternoon.
The injured, identified as Oinam Ibomcha Singh of Keirenphabi village, was struck on his right leg while attending to customers at his motor spare parts shop at Kumbi Lamlong Bazar around 12:15 pm, according to reports.
The bullet is believed to have been discharged from a Casper vehicle of the Mahar Regiment passing through the area from the Kumbi side. Following the incident, Army personnel immediately evacuated the injured shopkeeper to the Bishnupur District Hospital, where doctors performed an emergency surgery to remove the bullet lodged in his leg. He was later discharged after successful treatment.
Eyewitnesses described the incident as a result of negligence by security personnel and noted that the outcome could have been worse had there been customers inside the shop at the time.
Police from Kumbi Police Station rushed to the site and conducted a spot inquiry before registering a case to initiate an investigation into the matter.
Tension briefly flared in Kumbi and nearby areas following the incident, but the situation was brought under control after the Commanding Officer of the Mahar Regiment met local residents, assuring them that the firing was accidental and expressing readiness to apologise for the unfortunate event.
