‘One man, one vote’: CEO warns of action against proxy voters

Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Nagaland, Abhijit Sinha has warned of strong action against any individual(s)/village councils found indulging in proxy voting during the February 27 Assembly polls.
Stressing on ‘one man, one vote’, Sinha said “neither the head of the family nor the village council will be allowed to vote for others.”
In this regard, CEO has directed all presiding officers and polling parties not to allow such malpractices in their assigned polling stations. If such malpractices are detected the votes polled at that polling station will become null and void and action will be initiated against the defaulter as well as the polling officials, the CEO stated.
Sinha said only persons authorized by the Election Commission are allowed to enter the polling station also one or two authorized persons may be allowed for a short period at a time. The persons entering the polling station should not go near the voting compartment nor interfere in the polling process so that secrecy of voting is maintained, he said.
As informed earlier, Sinha said election campaigning by political parties and candidates should be stopped 48 hours before polling—February 25, 4 p.m.
He also said that star campaigners and others who are not from the particular constituencies should leave the constituency before February 25, 4 p.m. Further, the print and electronic media has been asked not to carry any advertisements of political parties and candidates in any manner after 4 p.m. February 25.
He said all measures have been put in place to facilitate the voters like providing Assured Minimum Facilities such as electricity, drinking water, toilets, ramp etc. in all the 2196 Polling Stations across the State.
